Title: California's After-School Commitment: Keeping Kids on Track and Out of Trouble

Summary: Research has long shown the after‐school hours are the “prime time” for juvenile crime and other dangerous behaviors. We know one out of four students is regularly left home alone after school. With no responsible adults present to mentor these children and engage them in positive activities, it’s no wonder so many get into trouble. Quality after‐school programs can fill these hours with safe, constructive activities that promote learning and keep kids on track and out of trouble. They provide positive alternatives to gangs, drugs and crime. This report highlights California’s groundbreaking commitment to after‐school programs. California invests more state funding in after‐school programs than any other state; its investment is concentrated in schools in low‐income neighborhoods with the greatest needs; and state dollars are being leveraged to attract tens of millions in local dollars and resources each year.
